Engineering Energy Independence for Centre Pivot Irrigation

Pivot Master is an intelligent solar synchronisation platform engineered specifically for centre pivot irrigation systems. It enables existing agricultural pump stations and pivots to operate using solar energy in Solar-Only and Seamless Blended configurations — without requiring battery storage for standard irrigation cycles.

Unlike generic inverter adaptations, Pivot Master is purpose-built for irrigation hydraulics, pivot logic integration, and agricultural duty cycles.

System Components

A complete Pivot Master installation consists of the following integrated components

Solar Array (Pump Supply)

Precisely designed string configurations within strict Voc limits, optimised for the VSD's MPPT tracking range across all temperature conditions.

Solar Variable Speed Drive (VSD)

Regulates pump speed and maintains hydraulic pressure at a predefined setpoint, dynamically responding to solar input variations.

Solar Power Supply (Pivot)

Dedicated power supply ensuring the centre pivot receives stable electrical energy for consistent rotation and operation.

Pivot Master Synchronisation Controller

The core intelligence — governs operational synchronisation between pump and pivot, managing all start-stop sequencing and fault protection.

Capacitor Bank (where required)

Supplies motor inrush current demand, manages power factor correction, and provides voltage stabilisation during transient load conditions.

The VSD regulates pump speed and maintains hydraulic pressure at a predefined setpoint. The Pivot Master controller governs operational synchronisation between pump and pivot.

  • The pump only operates when the pivot is actively irrigating
  • Coordinated start and stop sequencing
  • Stable pressure during pivot operation
  • Automatic shutdown if pivot faults or misaligns

This Prevents

  • Electrical instability

Pivot Master does not control pivot speed. Rotational speed remains governed by the pivot manufacturer's control panel. The system synchronises pump operation to pivot activity — it does not replace pivot logic.

Irradiance-Based Operational Control

The system continuously monitors solar irradiance. When solar energy falls below operational thresholds due to cloud cover or late-day decline:

  • A controlled shutdown sequence is initiated
  • Rapid start-stop cycling is prevented
  • Equipment stress is avoided

Time-delayed logic filters transient cloud movement to ensure stable irrigation continuity.

When irradiation recovers, the system automatically resumes operation.

True Solar-First Seamless Blending

Seamless blended hybrid operation

Pivot Master operates as a true solar-first blended irrigation system — the Seamless Blended Edition.

Solar energy contributes immediately when usable irradiance is present. The Variable Speed Drive dynamically blends available solar power with grid or generator supply in real time.

There is no changeover switching and no interruption to irrigation.

Throughout the day, solar production carries as much of the pump load as available conditions allow. When solar energy is reduced due to cloud cover or declining irradiation, grid supply automatically supplements only the shortfall required to maintain stable pump pressure.

This continuous blending architecture ensures:

Reduced grid consumption

No battery requirement for standard operation

Unlike conventional inverter systems that require a specific solar-only voltage threshold before operating independently, the Pivot Master blended architecture allows solar to contribute dynamically within the VSD operating range while maintaining full pressure stability.
